The "Microdent" is a popular and resilient plant with a fascinating history. Discovered in a garden center by Guillaume Byli of France in 2004, it was registered and named in 2008. This unique plant grows strictly prostrate and has an abundance of tiny teeth, giving it the appearance of an open dolphin's mouth. These small teeth, or cilia, are among the smallest in cultivation. While the interior of the plant's mouth typically has a gentle suffusion of light orangy-red, especially late in the growing season. Despite its mysterious ancestry, the "microdent" has become an officially registered cultivar with the International Carnivorous Plant Society. Its hardy nature and distinctive appearance have made it a favorite among fans of carnivorous plants.
Lucian Blanchard was propagating a new microdent cultivar at the same time that Guillaume Byli was establishing his microdent. Blanchard's has upright growth in the summer months, unlike the original "Microdent" which is strictly prostrated. This development resulted in a renaming of the cultivar to "Microdent Erected" due to its different growth behavior. Guillaume Byli, who established the original "Microdent," has confirmed the differences between the two cultivars. The "Microdent Erected" closely resembles the original "Microdent" but with the added feature of upright growth. This cultivar was originally purchased under the label "Microdent" but may need to be updated. I am currently researching this for updates.
