The "Holland Red," also known as the "Dutch Venus Flytrap," is a historic red-leaved flytrap that produces an abundant amount of organic red dye anthocyanin when exposed to strong light, resulting in deep dark red traps. It is the oldest documented red-leaved flytrap and was selected from a batch of seedlings sent to a horticulturalist in Holland in the 1970s. This cultivar is the parent of ‘Akai Ryu’ and most likely ‘Royal Red.’ The name "Holland Red" refers to the country of origin and the coloration of its foliage. This cultivar is officially registered with the International Carnivorous Plant Society (ICPS) and is a robust, red-green cultivar that can grow outdoors in temperate climates or in greenhouses. It produces large traps that develop red highlights later in the season.
